Top Home Maintenance to Tackle This Spring
As we move through the latter Spring, it’s certainly not too late yet to tackle home maintenance fitting to the season.
In this guide, we’ll explore some of the best home maintenance measures to consider this spring, from cleaning your decking/patio to gardening work to having a roofer inspect or/and maintain your roof. Let’s dive in!
1. Clean Your Guttering
To start things off, it’s a good idea to clean your guttering at least once a year but more often if required. Early spring or late autumn/early winter are arguably the best periods to do this. That said, if you haven’t cleaned your guttering in recent months (and certainly if you haven’t in a year or more), it’s a good idea to do it sooner rather than later.
Before proceeding, ensure you are aware of exactly what’s required and know all the safety steps, including using a ladder and having someone hold it from the bottom. You may also require a safety harness. If unsure about any aspect or/and you have concerns, be sure to hire a professional.
In order to clean guttering, you’ll need to take the following steps:
- Ascend a well-placed ladder with someone holding it from the bottom
- Ensure you wear appropriate gloves and take up a plastic bag with you
- Collect debris from the gutters and put it into a bag
- Descend the ladder, pour out the plastic bag into a bin or a compost mound set aside away from the ladder
- Repeat the above steps until you’ve rid your gutters of debris, but only do so to the extent that is safe. Do not fix the ladder in an unsafe area or/and position, however
- Inspect And Maintain Your Windows
Another form of home maintenance to consider this Spring is to take a look at your windows. With the Summer nearing and thus the need to let in more light, it’s important that windows around your home are clean and well-maintained.
Only undertake this work if you’re sure of what’s involved. Also, you should leave work on upstairs windows to professionals for your safety.
2. Clean Your Decking or Patio
If you have a deck or patio, you should make sure to clean it in the Spring ahead of (hopefully) more regular use during the summertime.
There are several ways to approach this including using a bristled brush and soapy water, a garden hose (though not one set to too powerful a setting if it’s a pressure hose or otherwise may use a lot of power).
In some cases, specific products will be needed such as to get rid of efflorescence or mould. Be sure to proceed with caution and use the right products in the right way per the manufacturer’s instructions. If in any doubt, it’s important to hire a professional.
3. Gardening Work
The Spring is also a great time to work on your garden so that it’s ready for relaxing with friends or family on summer days and evenings (just don’t forget sunscreen!).
Some of the best ways to enhance and maintain your garden this spring include:
- Prune certain plants (e.g. hydrangeas should be pruned in the springtime)
- Begin cutting the grass again around late February/early March, assuming the weather is getting warmer and drier at this point
- Planting (e.g. onion sets, sowing hardy vegetables, summer-flowering bulbs, etc.)
- Remove weeds and perform mulching
- Tidy your garden and clean garden furniture properly to ensure they are sufficiently clean and safe to use (e.g. you should disinfect garden furniture with suitable products - check with a reliable producer of these products or a gardener for clarity if unsure)
4. Declutter Your Home
It’s also a good idea to declutter your home in the Spring. To break this down into a more manageable task, you’ll want to consider when and for how long you might need to spend on this.
What’s more, you may find it’s best to spread it out over two days to avoid spending too much time at once on this task (e.g. perform half the decluttering on a Saturday and half on the Sunday or split it into two Saturdays a week apart).
5. Address Worn Down Exterior Paint
This Spring can act as a good chance to address exterior paint damage. Firstly, analyse (from the ground) the exterior of your home to determine whether there are any parts worn down enough to warrant repainting.
Repainting the exterior of your home near the surface level should be easy to undertake DIY after determining what type and colour of exterior paint is needed. If in doubt, consult with a professional.
To work on higher up parts, you should hire a professional. However, if you’re sure of what’s required, you can do so DIY, but you’ll need to take all safety considerations into account. For one, you’ll need a second person to always hold the ladder that you use from the bottom at all times. Moreover, you may need a safety harness depending on how far up the painting work is.
6. Hire a Roofer to Inspect Your Roof
At this time of year, it’s also a good plan to hire a roofer to take a look at your roof for signs of damage. This may result in some roof tiles/slates needing replacing. It’s important to maintain your roof not simply for aesthetic purposes but to protect the inside of your home from water leaks and other forms of exposure to the elements.
Without a sturdy and well-maintained roof, rainwater and wind can enter into the loft and cause damage that may impact your home in general.
