I have been a roofer and paver for 25 years and I know around the Durham Newcastle northeast.
I am fully qualified in roofing Occupations and in paving construction.
I have public liability and employers liability cover plus tool insurance and contact work insurance.
Friendly enough tradesman who certainly could talk the talk, he contacted us by phone, came out and quoted £1,200 to take off old roof and replace with insulation, mixed fibre board and rubber sheeting finished with trim. We were persuaded in the end to just cover the old roof instead with these materials after his workmen had already given up taking the old roof off (we saw them struggling with it) and had started putting insulation and mixed fibre board on top of the old roof without our knowledge but we did agree in the end as they had already done so in part and had screwed holes in the old roof now anyway. The old roof was actually sound just rusting in parts, so that was on us. We inspected the almost completed work after the workmen had left after a few hours and were shocked at discovering a very poor quality of the most shoddy workmanship, which had hidden mistakes all over the place in name avwhole 20ft by 8” strip where rubber sheet was just hanging in mid air and tacked over the side of said gap, with nothing underneath it, screws sticking through the inside of garage roof and the back of garage finished off in a most haphazard Heath Robinson way. After returning another day the workmen put a very thin plastic L shaped strip over the back of the roof screwed into thin air with 3” screws just dangling with what purpose this served is anyone’s guess as it just flapped around and was neither use nor ornament. We relayed this to tradesman by phone and text. After asking us what we wanted to do about it we requested a portion of our cash payment back to cover materials we had to buy to put right his workmen’s faults he replied he couldn’t give us any money back and stated he would get back to us, he never did. We also asked the tradesman to come and view the awful job his workmen did so far he has not done this. Neither did we get a receipt from him or an invoice for the cash we paid. The ten year workmanship guarantee we were promised is also a thing we also have no sight of. He did say he could send his team back to us to try and rectify their faults but we had to refuse this as there is no way we could allow this as if this is the sort of work they do in the first place any remedies they do afterwards is too risky. We just simply cannot recommend this tradesman which is a shame as at first we really thought we had got ourselves a good one.
