  • Can I paint on new plaster?

When painting on freshly layered plaster, how would be the best way for me to paint over the plaster without causing a mess or any problems to the paint/plaster later? The plaster is dry, but it has only been a few days since it has been completed. I’ve been advised that I could apply mist coats first to help seal the plaster – is this necessary, or should I just wait a little longer for the plaster to settle before painting?

How many turns of PTFE tape for radiator joints?

Hi All, Can anybody tell me, how many turns of PTFE tape is required on radiator joints? I have been told that it should be 10 to 12 turns, but I usually use 3 to 5 turns of PTFE on CH joints which hasn’t been much of a problem to me so far. (Apart from an occasional leak on the first test anyway!) Thanks, Harry

Do I need a white coat over magnolia walls before repainting?

Hello All, I have a number of walls which are currently painted magnolia and am currently considering repainting them in a light grey colour. Should I use white paint to prime the walls before the grey paint, or would I be able to go straight for covering the magnolia with light grey paint? Thanks, Gill

Screw and plug or adhesive for skirting boards?

I need to fit new skirting board in my living room as it's just been plastered. I'm just wondering which is the best way to fix the skirting board? Do I need to use screws and plugs or can I just use an adhesive? If so which should I use? The walls seem to be flat but i don't want there to be big gaps at the top that I have to fill with caulk. Thanks in advance.

Can I extend my washing machine hose?

I want to get a new washing machine but the pipes don’t reach. I have been using extension hoses for water and discharge water but I have been told that this is not good. Can the hoses be changed for longer ones? Is this a job for a plumber?

Replace floor joists - costs & estimates

How much would it cost to replace the floor joists and floor boards in a 12 foot by 14 foot room. The room has a chimney in it and is on the ground floor. The current floor is bowed quite a bit, any other suggestion for fixes other than replacing the floor would be good to know.

Shed wiring - need consumer unit?

I’d like to put a small light and socket in my little potting shed and an outside light with a motion sensor. Someone has suggested I’ll need a new consumer unit for these 3 things, even though the socket will hardly ever be used. Is this necessary do you think?

Is fensa registered to the person or the company?

Is FENSA registered to the company or the person? I have recently found that my windows need replacing and I have a friend who can change windows, but they are not FENSA registered themselves, but the company that employs them is. If they change my windows, is that covered if the one of the other company staff checks the work for them?

When should I prune my large Birch tree?

Hello I have a silver birch tree in my garden, adjacent to my house. It is getting quite tall and is getting very close to the gutter. I would like to get it trimmed down to a more reasonable size to reduce any risk of strong winds causing the tree to cause damage to my house. Is there a best suited time of the year to cut the top of the tree off? I am worried cutting it before or during winter may kill the tree, which I definitely don’t want. Any advice on this would be appreciated.
