Reopening fireplace in brick chimney breast

I'm reinstating a fireplace and have taken the plaster off the chimney breast. There's an old brick arch opening that's been roughly filled in. Do I need to support the brickwork as I take out the infill or should the old brick arch be holding everything in place?

Sharp sand & cement from joist support, Will it be strong enough?

I've used 3;1 Sharp sand & cement for a 3 brick high (2 by 2) post, topped with the mix & a piece of slate, to support a slightly flexing joist at the foot of a staircase, in preparation for laying Victorian floor tiles. These will be on Hardie backer board over floorboards. My concern is whether the cement mix combo I've used will stand the test of time? Thanks
