Wood undercoat before satin wood

I have arranged for someone to paint my h/s/l and the ceiling as I have health issues I can’t do it myself. I said do the woodwork myself I can manage that. I have 2 bannisters on my stair one has been up for years and well painted over the other is new and been painted once by my partner, he didn’t use primer and the painter who is coming said I’d be better using it before doing the satin wood. Do I need to undercoat every where doors skirtings etc or just the bannister? And do I sand it down first? Thanks

"It’s always best to sand down any woodwork that’s already been painted in order to give it a key for the new paint to stick to. Even though most satin paints say that they do not enquire an undercoat, it’s always advisable to prime the wood in order to ensure even coverage."

"it's always best to key any wood work so you know for sure that you're new coat has something to ader to unless you ate using zinsser bin which is a Primer you don't need to sand before coating and also it stops knots flashing though"

"When painting over satin or gloss painted surfaces you must sand it first to give the new paint something to adhere to. It doesn't mean you have to sand all of the previous coat off, just enough to take the shine off and roughen it up a bit. It is advisable to apply a primer as this gives the best base for the new paint, or if not primer, an undercoat as this evens out the tone and helps give a more consistent finish. Alternatively there are paints that are primer and top coat combined. Hope this helps :)"

"Yes
Sand down first then use the undercoat for all the woodwork before applying the satin / final coat"

"Would be better to sand them down the part that your partner didn't put primer and will be equal to the rest of the banister.
Satin wood after the primer- undercoat will give you a fantastic finish and would be equally to the rest of the banister."

"Undercoat is always a good idea as paint does not like to stick to other paint ,a light sanding is a good idea as it creates a key for new paint."

"I would use primer undercoat on everything so it all matches"

"Hello
It all depends on the finish you are hoping for. In the perfect scenario, I would replace the overpainted banister or use an orbital sander to really flatten out the bumps and overpainted areas. As for the other places, I would definitely sand them down for a better finish; for the best results at the end of any job, excellent preparation is critical.

"You always sand woodwork down before painting and also for each coat you apply,
It gives each coat of paint a key. After sanding clean everything from dust before you apply each coat of paint. Hope this helps"

"Hi there. It's always good practice to sand your surface and undercoat before doing woodwork. Johnstones undercoat is a very good paint."
