Roughly how wide should my foundation be the wall will be a course of brick backed up by a block

600mm wide. So thats 100mm of brick, 100mm cavity, 100mm block = 300mm + 150mm bearing either side of the wall = 600mm

600mm is standard if having a 100mm cavity. if your not having a cavity then 400-500mm should be fine.

The width of the foundation depends on the local soil type, but generally the minimum is 450mm. The concrete used in the conservatory foundations should have a minimum depth of 225mm.

For a light garden wall, a trench 30 cm (12 inch) deep should be sufficient if the soil is firm and well drained. But on unstable or weak ground, make it 46 cm (18 inch) deep.

The foundations need to be at least 3 times the width of a half brick wall (i.e. 34 cm/13.5 inch) or at least twice the width of a one brick wall (i.e. 45 cm/18 inch).
