What trees am I allowed to grow?

Are there certain trees I cannot grow on my property? And what about planning permission?

"You should never grow trees like Willow near to buildings as roots can damage drains and foundations. You also bear in mind the growth rate of any tree species as you don't anything that's going to impede the safety of buildings or annoy neighbours."
