"The type of stone would be down to the customers choice and the look they are going for.

As a stonemason with thirty years experience fire places can be made from pretty much any type of stone from Granite and marble to lime and sand stone. some stone will be unsuitable but this will be down to factors such as density and will be concerned with local stones rather than type of stone. For example some types of sand stone are very soft and would not be used where other types are very hard and have been used for centaury's.

the best place to start is to have a very clear picture of what you want the fireplace to look like then get a local stonemason to advise you and give you a quote .

Building in stone will give you endless options so to save time and money be clear about what you want."
