What is overmulching

I've been advised not to 'overmulch' my tree. I was too shy to admit to the individual that I've no idea what that means! Could you please explain the term to me? Thank you :)

"Hi,

Excessive mulch reduces soil oxygen for roots, suffocating them and causing them to die.
There for the roots are in search of water
And and if it’s to overmulching the roots die."
