"Your question is nit very clear so I try answer guess what your painting...
If it is walls or ceiling and it is emulsion paint No undercoat needed...just paint direct .

If it is doors windows skirtings or window cills..
You can use eggshell .satin finish rub down woodwork then paint 2 coats..

Or you can use acrylic undercoat water based then paint your colour on top of this .. the undercoat will grip the surface ..hope this helps robert. Rs decorators"

"Keep it basic. You need to use a layer of white emulsion as a background to even out or cover any difference between your chosen option and what's currently on the walls. Use it as transition layer."

"If your on about interior walls. I'd definitely use a off white or a very light grey base coat. The correct undercoat will save alot of work on the too coat"
