Wall’s load capacity

Hi,

I am planning to put a shelf on the wall that when loaded will be around 30-35 kg.
The wall it is not a load bearing wall, it is an internal wall that separate my linkingroom and a storage space .
The thickness of the wall is around 4 inches/10cm thick, and it is not timber or plaster board, when I drillled it had a layer of fine orange layer and a grey thicker layer.
I live in an ex council house east London, if that helps.
Do you think that it could bear that kind of weight?
The shelves would be around 45 cm deep and 100 cm long.

Thank you very much in advance.

"Yes it should be fine as your going into block, make sure you use wall anchors to secure the brackets."

"The wall will be made from 70mm blocks then plastered so drill carefully for 50mm and use grey wall plugs for better grip and use no more nails adhesive or similar also"

"Hi.

I would guess the wall is brick, covered in plaster, which makes it generally a very sound item to drill in to and fit brackets for shelving, but .... a shelf 460mm deep ( 18" ) is a lot to suspend on any wall, especially when you are going to add weight by storing items on that shelf. The wall bracket needs to be at least 450mm deep ( below the shelf ) and probably 600mm tall with at least 3 fixing points to screw it into the wall. Also, the bracket needs to be of steel, approx. 3mm or more in thickness. Any thinner, or if you use a pressed steel bracket, you risk a collapse as the brackets may well buckle.

Google ' Gallows bracket '. Look for the sizes I mentioned and also 3mm or thicker material. They will be more expensive than pressed steel brackets but they will not buckle under the weight.

Bestest,

Chris M."

"You are drilling into old stock brick brick You can get an assortment of raw plugs metal and plastic"

"Yes they would hold up really well, just ensure your fixings are tight and secure, sounds like a cement block wall which is pretty strong"

"Difficult one!
However if you had to use a masonry drill bit to drill your hole then it is more than likely to be a solid 4" wall. If your drill bit went through with ease then it could be a man made board of some kind.
There are fixings for both types and for hollow walls
You just need to determine what type of wall you have and purchase the correct fixings for that wall.
Hope that helps you somewhat."

"Old stock bricks that are now very dry. Use a good quality plug and make sure you drill deep enough. Don’t overload day 1, you may get some movement, good luck"

"You are drilling into an old type of brick wall and this should be sufficient to carry the load. Ensure you use the correct wall plugs to fasten the shelves to minimise movement of the fittings."

"Seems to me the wall is made from bricks and blocks so you’ll be fine to drill in there make sure your shelf and brackets can support that load also use some bolts rather then screw"

"I wouldn't say so you could try drill and plug the wall first to see if that helps but I wouldn't risk it...."
