Yes you can update an existing system with better sensors. Most sensors are compatable with most control systems when hard wired.

To be honest for the cost you would be better updating it to a new version.  We would recommend an Ajax wireless system which you can add to and turn your home or business in to full automation.
The issue you have when trying to add to an old system is that you are adding modern technology to an old infrastructure

As long as the original cables are intact then yes but it is worth considering updating the controls and outside sounders. An old alarm bell box with faded or out of date company identity can be an invitation to a burglar.
