Surface water drain vs soakaway

We live next to a river and are wondering whether rainwater is better going into a surface water drain or a soakaway?

"Either should be fine but without knowing the circumstances and the amount of water that your talking about it is a little difficult to comment on this positively so for the safe bet I would go with a surface water drain"

"Always try and get permission to connect into a main drain if you're lucky enough to have one. However, if you have suitable grounds for a soaraway this would be the preferred method for local authorities."

"It is much cheaper putting the drain in If your drain is going direct to the water course but if the water course floods then it might flood you out if you haven’t got a none return valve fitted. However in heavy rain and if the river is up then the NRV would be shut and would stop any water leaving your property which could also flood you out. You could do with a site investigation before you make any next steps.

"Best option is to have soakaway with over flow pipe to river .
Works would cost around £2000"

"I would but it into a surface water drain that's if it is a surface water drain and not a foul water drain most people have there surface water put into a soakaway because local water authority do not like rain water going into the main drain because it overwhelms the sewage treatment works"

"Surface water drain is the best if you can connect to a surface water sewer but if the distance is too far or the connection fee is going to be greater that the cost of the soakaway then soakaway is the better option, plus soakaways have multiple limitations so I would suggest surface water drain every time."

"Good afternoon,

You can get a reduction on your water rates if you can prove to the local authorities that your rain water does not enter the main water treatment system buy means of a soakaway ,
This can be proven buy means of a fully recorded cctv survey and report.
If you do not have a soakaway, this is something we undertake and install given the correct ground conditions.
