Can an extension be built with a single skin of bricks rather than two and then insulated with panels?

"I'm guessing your using face bricks on the outside and then asking if you can insulate the back of wall

The question is structurally would it support a roof without more detail hard to answer

An architect should be called if your not sure"

"Yes you can do this as long as you don’t build further than 3 meters out, must install RSJ beam wherever the opening is going to be."

"Hi Carol, the reason why most extensions are done with a cavity construction it’s to stop the outside elements getting inside as masonry bricks are like sponges and can soak water up which mean it will cause damp internally. The cavity which is a break in the wall typically 100mm prevents this. In addition, the internal leaf typically supports the roof structure.

Hope this is of help

"Hi Carol, the simple answer to your question is yes you can. However, method of construction needs to be carefully considered. External Single brick skin can be used as part of your wall construction providing the other materials used enables the wall to meet Approve Documents requirements, for wall integrity.
This would be approved under documents: B-Fire safety, F-proper ventilation, E- Resistance to sound and L- Fuel&power/Energy efficiency. What you need to ensure is that your construction does not fall under a Non-Traditional construction as this has far reaching consequence. Good luck, Kris"

"If the extension is getting built from scratch the answer is no because it has to be build by the building regulations and they won’t allow a single layer building to become a living space"

"single story yes but not advised due to damp and rising fuel cost with double brick stops ingression of water penatration"

"hi if you are to build a single skin brick extension you would have to build a timber wall inside and insolate it leaving a minimum of 50mm ventilated are gap between insolation and brickwork this would be classed as timber frame and in most cases you build the timber frame first and fix brick ties to it to support the brick walls"
