Should I use a waterproofing compound on my home’s exterior brickwork? What are the pros and cons and is it okay to add this DIY? Is it expensive?

"Yes waterproofing or plasticiser helps to deter the moisture entering in your interior which could cause milder efflorescence and moulding"

"It depends if its new brickwork or old one on the fresh I would leave it a year for the salt to come out of the mortar when washing it and then seal it a course you can do it yourself always consult in the specialist shops b4 buying any product also job can be expensive and dangerous if you do it your self if you don't have right equipment etc. safe steps alloy tower safety equipment."

"This isn't necessary but certainly won't do you any harm ...it can be done diy"

"Hi,

The cost obviously relates to the size of the property and access. Generally it’s easy to apply. We have applied with an electric sprayer but a simple pump sprayer would suffice.

It’s not something that is necessary on all properties. We were called to a job that had random large damp patches too high to be rising damp and clearly not down to ventilation or a leak. The affected wall was facing a field and would be drenched by driving rain totally exposed to the elements. We sprayed the whole exterior and they haven’t had a reoccurrence with works completed ten years ago

This was a Victorian house so no cavity walls"

"It's relatively straightforward. Worth pressure washing the walls first then going directly to a damp proofing supplier and they'll be able to advise on what product and spec to go with"
