Satinwood enquiry

If I apply a good undercoat on my doors will satinwood be a good choice as the final coat or gloss for example will it be less likely for the paint to scratch easily as I have dogs who sometimes scratch if the door is closed on them and what brand of satinwood would come highly recommended

"Yes, satinwood is a great choice for doors, especially if you prefer a less shiny finish than gloss. However, when it comes to scratch resistance, gloss is generally more durable due to its harder finish. But if you apply a high-quality undercoat and topcoat, satinwood can still provide a tough, long-lasting surface."

"Satinwood is a good choice for doors as it provides a durable, smooth, and slightly glossy finish, making it easier to clean than matt paints. However, gloss is generally more resistant to scratches and scuffs due to its harder finish. Since you have dogs that may scratch the doors, gloss would be the more durable option.

That said, if you prefer satinwood for its softer sheen, using a high-quality brand and applying multiple coats will help improve durability. Here are some recommended satinwood paints:

1. Dulux Trade Satinwood – A self-undercoating, tough, and durable finish that is resistant to yellowing.

2. Johnstone’s Trade Satinwood – Known for good coverage and durability.

3. Crown Trade Fastflow Satin – A hybrid formula that dries quickly and is hard-wearing.

4. Little Greene Intelligent Satinwood – Eco-friendly, tough, and washable.

For added protection, you could apply a clear polyurethane topcoat over satinwood to make it more scratch-resistant. Alternatively, using a hard-wearing gloss paint like Dulux Trade High Gloss would offer superior resistance to scratches."

"Hello alison,
Dogs will scratch through any paint on any woodsurface.
Their honestly is no paint that will prevent that.
You can try eggshell.
You will need to undercoat twice then topcoat twice with the eggshell quickdrying paint.
You can purchase eggshell in any colour and brand would be dulux."

"Hi Alison. So I normally use Zinsser bullseye 123+ as an undercoat/primer and then Benjamin Moore scuffx semi-gloss. It's all water based and doesn't yellow and you can easily get both coats on in a day. It should stand up well against the dogs."

"I always give any wood a prime of white paint before using satin or gloss, but it’s not necessary guna stop your dogs from scratches and being visible, crown satin is the only wood paint I’ve ever used can never fault it

Thanks

"Preparation is key to painting, evenly sanded to key the surfaces before applying any paint helps it adhere properly."

"Hi Alison, satinwood can also be used on doors as long as you applied a good undercoat. I would also recommend a quick dry satinwood(water based) rather than oil based one which takes longer to dry."
