Roof mastic/sealant

A roofer came and fixed a leak in our roof. Afterwards the roof was still leaking. He came back out and re-tiled a section. We were out at the time and when we got back he had covered the roof with a sticky, black paint/tar like sealant. Any idea if this is standard practise or is it a sign of a botched job and something we should be concerned about? Thanks for any helo

"My personal opinion is its a botched job, you should never need to apply a tar/ paint over the top of the roof tiles, sounds like they haven't managed to find the cause of the leak properly"

"Ask your roofer for an explanation of the work he carried out and the reasoning he used to decide on using what sounds like bitumen paint.

But in my experience even using bitumen paint as a "fix" is a clear cut sign of a rouge trader."

"To me it sounds a bit of a bodged job, just to paint over tiles with bitumen, not good practice anywhere. Ok for a short term fix if your planning on a new roof, sounds to me like he couldn’t find the cause of the leak or knew how to fix it. I would use a different roofer or ask the same guy to come back and repair it properly."

"Hi Pete, not sure excatly what he put on your roof but yes it sounds like he's just trying to get it to stop leaking the quickest and cheapest way possible, even if it did stop leaking this would probably only be temporary so I advise having the problem looked at by another roofer."

"All depends if it's a flat roof or not if it's a tile roof then it's a Bods job"
