Replacing Existing Wooden Claddingg

I need to replace the existing painted wooden vertical cladding to an old farm outbuilding. The boards are tongued and grooved. My father was a time served joiner - but, sadly, no longer with us.
What basic things do I need to be mindful of ie. :
1 Thickness of boards.
2. Type of wood.
3 Space between boards to allow for expansion.
4 Preparation of boards before fixing - type of primer, paint etc.
5 Type of nails, screws etc for fixing.
Many thanks for your advice.
much appreciated

"Evening,
Thickness of t&g should be at least 12mm thick and secret nailed in the tongue and ideally primed before fixing and preferably with a coat of whatever colour your going with to allow for when timber expands you don't see any bare wood . If it was me I'd use bedec barn paint which doesn't need a primer ."

"1, The width is generally 4 to 6 times board width, with 75 to 150mm being the recommended range apart from for T&G boards, which should be no greater than 120mm wide.
2-4Red Cedar is considered the most stable of the softwoods. If left untreated, the cladding boards should stay straight and last for many
decades. If a treatment is required, i.e. painting or staining, the stability and low resin content in the wood makes it a good choice.
3,
A 15mm gap shall be provided between the lowest cladding board edge and the ground A clear cavity between the rear face of the cladding and the outer wall/ surface of the structure being clad should be provided of no less than 25mm to allow suficient airflow Joists shall be no more than 500mm from centre to centre
5,aluminium screws or stainless steel screws, end caps L shape trims for corners !"
