Re opening a door from kitchen to garage

Hi, we’re considering reopening a door that would’ve once been in our kitchen through to the garage area (possibly old cold store/pantry) in our late Victorian semi.

Can we just remove the newer bricks or do we have to rebuild it?

Also wanting to create a pantry in the opening so wondering best way to section off from the rest of the garage.

"If the new bricks have been toothed in then you would have to rebuild the opening if there is a straight joint then you should be ok just removing the bricks assuming there was an opening there before the lintel should still be in place and there should be no structural issue
A stud wall would be the cheapest and easiest way to section of the rest of the garage

"Hello,

There are so many variables. It will depend on what has been done in the past.

We would happily have a look at it for you

Kind Regards,

"if the builder had no reason to remove the concrete lintel above the door, then you are good to remove the bricks used to close the opening. To check you may have to remove a small section of plaster top left or top right above the head to expose it.

remove bricks , fit a door lining, fit door.

to section garage, quickest way would be to build a 1/2hour fire check stud partition wall."

"I wood assume there would be a lintel that would not been taken out when the doorway was blocked up but a little of exploration would not take long,to find the answer, and sheeting the rest of the garage would be advised"

"you may need a steel in the opening already might have one if it was open before but best to get a builder round to check"

"if the new bricks have been toothed into the old ones (ie the bricks are staggered into the old ones) then you would need to have them all replaced but also the lintel above needs checking it is still all solid enough to take above"

"You could be fortunate and knock therough only, howver a builder needs to advise you on structural elements and current condition of lintel etc"

"Hi,
Yes re opening an existing doorway is not a problem provided the original lintel is still in place.
Regarding the partition a stud wall to comply to insulation and fire regs would work very well.
Hope this helps"

Phone your local building control for advice on how to proceed ."

"As long as it still has the Lintol you can re fit the door. You can build partition walls to separate from the garage and plaster"
