Power to garage

Hi,

My garage has what appears to be a partially and likely badly completed electricity supply carried out by previous owner.

There's a consumer unit with breakers fitted in the garage which is wired to several lights and plug sockets. I don't see any indication that this is connected to the house and so has no supply.

There is an armoured cable coming from the consumer unit and out the garage roof. However, it goes back into the garage and is badly spliced to a old lawnmower cable. I think the intention by the previous owner was to plug this armoured cable into a socket in the kitchen to supply the garage. (Could be wrong but that's what it looks like.)

What would be required to make this safe and functional?

Thanks

"Hi Chloe,

The best way is for someone to physically inspect the existing setup and then make a plan to make it safe.

Let me know if you want me to pop by and take a look. Regards, Ian"

"Hi this sounds like your typical diy bodge job , , a qualified electrician would need to attend to see the extent of the works required.

"You would need a new supply cable armoured to supply the garage board and this would need testing and certification"

"Hi, could either require/Re route the existing armoured cable and install it properly, or replace it with a new depending on how bad the old one is."

"Hi Chloe,

Without a first hand inspection, or some photos it's pretty hard today form sure.

Depending on how modern the board is in the garage it may be as simple as running a supply to this, although small garage boards aren't very expensive. It depends where the feeds been taken from at the house end too.

Hope this helps a bit

"hi without seeing the consumer unit and cable would be hard to say but to install new consumer unit with appropriate safety features ie RCBO/RCD and armourd cable back to the main board with appropriate earthing and cable size for the run to the outbuilding not overly expensive

"Hi Chloe, I think something like that would require an EICR to check what the previous owner has done to the installation. Prices would start at £180 for a 1 bed flat and go up by £50 for each bedroom. Let me know if you want to discuss this further"
