Plug socket off but appliances still running

I just moved into a flat and noticed that 2 of the wall sockets remain live even when they are switched off. E.g TV is switched off but the light remains on.

The two wall sockets in question are in different rooms, I haven't tested all the other sockets in the flat yet but wanted to know what could cause this?

"Hi mate, the switch in the socket has broken so the circuit is not broken when you switch the socket off. Please be very careful if you decide to change yourself as other parts in the socket may also be live. Kev"

"You have faulty socket outlets, both need to be replaced. Take caution before / when carrying out any work"

"Please clarify the question. Where have you turned them off? On the wall plug socket itself? This will be a failed plug socket and it must be changed. If it is a loose or faulty contact in the switch, it is a fire risk! Unplug all devices from it and seek electrical assistance to have it replaced checked!
If you have turned the socket circuits off at the main control panel, then likely it is being supplied through another power or light circuit. Go to the board and turn off each small breaker in sequence. When the light/tv goes off, identify which breaker it is associated too. CAUTION The labelling on the consumer unit may be incorrectly labelled. Again, notify and seek electrical advise from a qualified electrician."

"It sounds to me like the switches on the socket outlet are not working and the sockets are faulty. I would recommend hiring an electrician to replace them."

"You have two faulty sockets by the sound of it. I would get a qualified electrician to change the sockets and probably check the others"

"You have two faulty sockets that need replacing by an electrician - who should also test circuit and also check condition of the other sockets in the house."

"Are the sockets in question on another mcb circuit? Can you explain more? Like the actual socket face switch is still live when switched off?"

"Hi It maybe that the sockets are on a circuit thats not been identified at the consumer unit, it realy needs to be investigating by electrician"
