New laid turf very patchy

I had a new turf laid in September 2024 and did not cut the grass till November The grass was about a foot in height I hired a gardener to cut the grass first with the trimmer and then with the lawnmower
Since then the turf has gone very patchy it looks as if at the patches the grass has been pressed and there is no sign of the grass growing there
What is wrong with it? Can it be put right so that it looks like a nice neat proper lawn?
Please advise what has to be done and how much will it cost?
Thanking you in advance

"Just a quick one do you have animals? And if so are they using the grass as a toilet just this can massively effect new turf"

"Hi there, I’d suggest ensuring the ground stays damp, avoid walking over it and spread the area with grass seed & feed, progress will be slow due to the time of year but your efforts will have strong fruition by early spring. While the grass is young cut it regularly and keep uniform length but do not cut more than a 1/3 off at a time,"

"Was a huge mistake to wait so long for a cut. In the best conditions we have the first cut between 2-3 weeks after installation. this depends on : root checks, grass height(7-8 cm ).The mower needs a sharp blade (fresh sharp if is possible) and very low speed push the lawn mower. Grass must to be dry to avoid damage and the las thing never lower and cut no more then 1/3."

"So when turf gets laid you need to be giving its first cut around 75mm in height about 3-4 weeks after being laid. I normally advise customers that they need to be cutting their new lawn for the first year on the highest mower height. To give it time to root in properly. Im assuming its first mow was cut very short that has shocked the grass and it hasn't rooted properly in places. It could be put right by removing patchy area's and either turfing the patches or using seed. Without seeing the lawn I am unable to tell you how much it could cost. Hope this has answered your question."

"Hi there what I would suggest is to put grass seed in the patchy areas and a lot of water"

"In my experience cut out new soil underneath & new turf is the best way to combat the problem. As for cost for me to do it I would need to take a look at it to see much of it needs doing"
