Mist coat paint/water ratio

Hi, what’s a good mist coat paint ratio? I’ve heard of 50/50, 90/10 and 80/20. Any all advice is appreciated

"The best mist coat ratio varies from the substrate to substrate and product to product. A 4:1 paint to water ratio generally works well for new plaster. A ratio of 1:1 may suffice for old plaster. The same applies to existing and new render. However, you should always follow the instructions on the paint tin – manufacturers may recommend other dilutions."

"A good mist coat paint-to-water ratio depends slightly on the paint brand, but a safe and effective general ratio is:

70% paint to 30% water

(or roughly 3 parts paint to 1 part water)

This creates a thinned-down emulsion that soaks into new plaster or drywall properly, allowing it to breathe and providing a good base for topcoats.

---

If the plaster is very fresh or extremely dry:

You can go a bit thinner, like 60/40 (paint/water), so it soaks in more easily.

How to test:

Roll some on and see if it absorbs quickly into the wall.

It shouldn’t sit on the surface like regular paint—it should slightly tint the wall and dry with a chalky feel.

Let me know what paint you’re using and I can give a more specific ratio!"

"Here’s a solid response you can post for the mist coat paint/water ratio question:

Hi! A common and reliable mist coat ratio is 70/30 (70% paint, 30% water) when using non-vinyl matt emulsion on fresh plaster. Some use 80/20 or even 90/10 depending on paint thickness, but avoid going too thick—it won’t soak into the plaster properly. Stir well and apply a light coat to help the next layers adhere better. Always test a small area"

"50/50 Ratio works well as long as you allow appropriate time for it to dry completely throughout.
Alternatively, B&Q or Wicks provide fresh plaster paint which is also suitable for."
