Local authority inspectors vs independent inspectors

In general, is it better to consult with a local authority building inspector or an independent one when you're designing and building a big house extension?

"We would recommend independent inspectors, as if the local authority advise incorrectly there is no action that can be taken against them whereas if independent inspectors advise incorrectly you can take action against them."

"Hi,

Independent definitely. There is no much difference in price but their communication is a lot better. They will be available to help at short notice, answer phone calls and emails contrary to local authority inspector."

"independent - you are paying them and they work for you.

local authority - you are paying them and they work for the local authority."
