Is there any reason for having multiple aerials?

I've just bought a house with 3 aerials on the chimney. Before I arrange for two to be taken down, might there be a technical reason for this?

"Hi Adam
There could be a few reasons for having several aerials on one chimney

1- Price , could have been more cost effective to install individual aerials rather than an amplifier for an aerial system
2- To receive signals from multiple transmitters
ie RTE and Freeview

This is not a setup that you would install now as one aerial can now cover most required transmissions
Depending on signal strength in your area a signal amplifier may be required"

"Depends on signal coverage in your area. 1 aerial works in most places in Carlisle with a splitter on. If signal is low, splitting signal will weaken signal, so maybe 3 been put up for 3 different rooms?"

"Not really. I know many years ago instead of installing a booster installers use to install a new aerial for that TV. As you know you can run many TVs from 1 aerial as long as its been upgraded in the last few years and a booster/spliter has been installed."

"These could be old aerials that have not been taken down or old aerials that do not work or old dab aerials or aerials before freeview came out.

So the answer is no you only need the one freeview aerial. Another thing to check is the mast pole is not being shared with neighbours and a aerial for each house (this is very rare but it can happen)"

"The only reason you need multiple aerials is it for example you want to watch programs from Yorkshire and say Wales (again only if you are in the right location to receive these signals)
Your aerial engineer will tell you which is the correct aerial to keep up"

"3aerials would suggest 3 tv points it can be 1 aerial with smp to feed all three points"

"In my area years ago you would have one aerial on different transmitter for channel 5 and other aerial on other transmitter for bbc, itv and channel 4, there is no reason to have 3 aerials one aerial will do but you might be better to update to new aerial as they are now group for the transmitter you receive your reception from, Hope this was of some help to you.

"It could be that the aerials are quite old from before digital tv . Sometimes to get a good reception on some channels you had to point one aerial in one direction to one transmitter and another aerial in a different direction to an another transmitter.
Nowadays you should only really need one aerial and if you have multiple cables then a splitter or amplifier can be used for this."

"Hi you only need one aerial these days there are several reasons why they put 3 up it could be poor signal so put 3 to get optimum signal to all rooms or it might be to get several transmitters such as london and anglia or one was faulty and they replaced without removing old one. Hope this helped"

"Hi, you only need one correctly working aerial, if you need multiple points from this one then you may possibly need a booster, multiple aerial s would mean you don’t need a booster"
