Is sapele a good hardwood?

Is sapele a good hardwood for staircases? I'm told it looks a bit like mahogany, but I don't know much else.

"yes according to two sources .multiturn.co.uk and pearstairs.co.uk

* Multistairs.co.uk said: Sapele Perfect for traditional types of staircases Designs, Sapele has a truly grand appearance, Which when is polished, Complements White primed stair components beautifully. It comes in a various colours from rich golden to a dark reddish- brown , but camn be stained to get a much darker finish.

pearstairs.co.uk Said: Sapele is a "very durable" wood is best worked by hand for the optimum effect . It turns and glues and finishes wonderfully. It is often chosen over mohogany due to its colouring"

"Hi Adam
Sapele is part of the Mahogany Family and is used in the fabrication of staircases, doors, skirtings & general joinery. Its price as gone up over the last year, as we use a lot of it in our joinery manufacture, many thanks.

"Sapele is a Mahogany sub species I think. I could google it, but I'm trying to remember what I learned in college in the very late 70s. Its more brittle and dry than most hardwoods Im used to. Its also a bit '80s Office' but I've seen it looking good as pillar and wall cladding in trendy bars lately. I'd say its fine for staircases , in fact I've seen them in commercial buildings."

"Sapele is a durable hardwood from Africa – a highly-prized alternative to genuine mahogany. It is stronger and harder than mahogany and can be a long-lasting material for furniture, luxury flooring"
