"Yes it is possible to trim roots to prevent them from going out too far, but the tree puts the roots out for stability and nutrients/water. So it is best to avoid cutting roots if possible."

"You can do this depending on the tree and how far away (the distance from the tree trunk) you are planning to trim. There is an advised distance you should cut and how it should be done. Worth bearing in mind that there are various laws and legislations in place for trees so worth checking those before doing anything."

"Yes, it is possible to trim tree roots, but it should be done with caution. Here are some important points to consider:

1. Reason for Trimming: Roots may need to be trimmed if they are causing damage to nearby structures, sidewalks, or if they are competing with other plants for nutrients.

2. Timing: The best time to trim roots is during the tree's dormant season, similar to pruning branches. This minimizes stress on the tree.

3. Extent of Trimming: Avoid cutting more than one-third of the root system at a time. Excessive root trimming can destabilize the tree and lead to health issues.

4. Technique: Use clean, sharp tools to make clean cuts. It's important to avoid damaging the main roots that support the tree.

5. Aftercare: After trimming, monitor the tree for signs of stress, such as wilting or leaf drop, and provide adequate water and care.

In summary, while it is possible to trim tree roots, it should be done carefully to avoid harming the tree."
