Increasing ceiling/roof height on kitchen to allow for patio doors
I have a kitchen that has nothing on top, that has a very low ceiling/roof.
Half of the kitchen’s roof is normal, and around the middle there is a big drop, with the end height being about 1.40cm.
I would like to raise the ceiling/roof to be able to install patio doors and be able to see the landscape views from the kitchen.
How much could this cost and would it be worth it? Is it a lengthy job?
Thanks!

"May be structural work required will always be possible to add a dormer to your roof to accommodate this
Timescales will vary depending on scope of work"

"Hi there, as others have said hard to tell without seeing pictures but you may be talking about a hipped roof and you want to create a gable?
Alternatively if you mean the roof slopes towards the outside wall/back garden - you may be able to create small dormer overhang to enable doors underneath
Hard to give a ball park figure as so many variables!"

"It all depends on why the ceiling is so low. Is it a false ceiling or does it have beams for upper floor inside or possibly the staircase? Until the ceiling is removed to expose what’s underneath it would only be possible to tell from investigating"

"Would need to know what your current roof is. Is it flat pitched
It’s a job that would really need looking at to price correctly
However if it’s what I think it is its not a long process just very messy and around £3 to 5 thousand but it’s a guess at this time"

"Hi it sounds like it will be possible hard to tell without seeing it or a picture but from what you’ve explained can’t see any problem. It’s not a big job neither would it take to long.
Thanks Carmine"

"Raising the ceiling or roof to allow for patio doors and better views is a significant structural project. Here’s an overview of the costs, process, and considerations:
Estimated Costs:
1. Structural Alterations:
• Raising a flat or pitched roof and ceiling height: £10,000–£20,000 (depends on size and complexity).
• Installing structural beams or supports (if needed): £1,500–£3,000.
2. Patio Doors Installation:
• Cost of doors: £1,500–£4,000 (depending on size and material).
• Fitting and finishing: £500–£1,500.
3. Insulation and Roofing:
• Insulation: £1,000–£2,000.
• Re-roofing or repairs: £2,000–£5,000.
4. Internal Works:
• Plastering, decorating, and finishing: £1,000–£3,000.
5. Building Regulations and Permits:
• Building control fees and structural engineer: £500–£1,000.
Total Ballpark:
Expect a total cost between £15,000 and £35,000, depending on the size, materials, and complexity of the project.
Timeline:
• Design and Approvals: 4–6 weeks for planning and building regulation approvals (if needed).
• Construction: 4–8 weeks, depending on the scope of work.
Is It Worth It?
• Value Addition: Raising the roof and installing patio doors can significantly enhance the space, increase natural light, and boost your home’s resale value.
• Challenges: The cost and disruption during construction can be considerable, so evaluate"

"I can tell you roughly what would be involved to carry this out. However cost, time and whether is worth it depend on many variables. The size of the structure, the type of roof you have, the type of doors you want, and the materials needed will all affect the time and cost.
The first step would be taking off either a section of the roof or even the whole roof. This depends on the type of roof you have and how it's constructed. The second step is raising the wall where the patio doors will go and creating the opening for the doors. Finally work on the roof, to either build a new roof (which is the most likely scenario) or repair the roof with adjustments.
Whether it's worth it is all down to you, and whether you feel that it would be an improvement that would enhance your home enough for you to feel a tangible benefit, as well as whether you can afford to do this. It wouldn't necessarily increase the value of your home, but may make it more sell-able if that is a consideration."
