What role does mulch play in the gardening process and how important is it?

Mulching is generally used to save water, suppress weeds and improve the soil around plants but it also gives your garden a neat, tidy appearance and can reduce the amount of time spent on tasks such as watering and weeding.

The best time to put down mulch is in the spring when the weather is consistently warm. But you don't want to put it down too early or you may accidently bury emerging perennials. Mulch after weeding and after stripping off old mulch (don't add a layer of new mulch over a layer of old). Fall is also a good time to mulch to conserve moisture and protect soil and roots from poor weather.

Hi Harry mulch tends to trap the water in the soil so adds a layer of protection over the top soil and stops it drying out. be careful of some mulch products as they have been known to destroy plants due to what they have been treated with. Better to use mulch that has just been through a chipper rather than the garden centre variety that usually is treated with chemicals. Losing a bed of expensive roses to a bag of mulch is not a good idea.
