How much weight on stud wall?

Hi, I’m moving to a new flat and have bought a tv shelf unit with cupboard storage either side which can be wall mounted. There won’t be a lot of weight inside the cupboards but the unit itself is very heavy ( about 30kg) and the tv is a 55inch ( so I’m guessing about 10-15kg). Is this too much weight to mount on a stud wall?

"Hi Heather,
Good evening. Its most definitely too heavy. It could be an accident waiting to happen. You do get plasterboard fixings that they recommend for certain weights that you can use on stud walls. But i dont think they are any good. Maybe if you called a builder/carpenter they would be able to find the studwork to screw straight into. Then this would be okay. As you are fixing into the frame and not the plasterboard. Hope this helps.
Thank you
Kind regards Shane"

"All you have to do is find the uprights of a stud wall and fix into those. They are usually 400 or 600 centres."

"Geefix dry wall mounting system should be fine but you do need to know what size plaster board you are going to hang on
It should be 12.5 mm or 15mm but I have seen some studwork in 9.5 mm that would be an no
So just use a small drill bit and find out
Also be aware that there will be no cable protection in most stud walling"

"Unless you can find strong anchor points for the units and tv it would be to much for just plasterboard alone normal structural stud walls would have plywood behind the plasterboard that gives you more strength"

"no 10-15kg would be fine on a stud wall
better to try and fix into on of the vertical studs if you can

better still would be to find two vertical studs where you want to fix the tv bracket, cut out the plasterboard. this will expose the studwork.

you can fix in extra timber noggins of the same size where the fixings are required or fix 18mm plywood in between the studs in mind

fit back to original piece of plasterboard. fill with easyfill filler to finish and paint to match"

"Hi,

The main problem with hanging things on the stud work is its condition. It depends on the materials used, work quality performance, and moisture in the room. It is better to check these conditions first and, depending on the kind of issues or lack of them, continue the work.
Let's assume everything is fine, so a proper number of hanging points is needed. If you find the studs behind the plasterboard, that will be great. You can use them as support without any doubts. If not, use the Easyfix Self-Drill Plasterboard Fixings Metal, which can bear a load of about 75kg.

The second option, if some issues are found, is to get rid of a piece of plasterboard cut on the edges, similar in size to the cupboard, and fix additional support, like timbers between the studs, or fix plywood on the front of studs in a recent plasterboard place. In the end, this part of the wall will be hidden by the cupboard. The plywood is good support and can bear hundreds of kilograms."
