Good colours for front facing steps

I was thinking of painting the front facing sides of my stairs steps a range of different colours (while keeping the top of the steps a uniform silver tone). What colours would go together for painting the front-facing sides of the stair steps?

"You would need a contrasting colour ideally as to ensure that the rise can be visually identifiable to avoid trips"

"You could go for a gradient look so it is gradually fades in to the top to blend in or fade out at the bottom. Perhaps you want to go for a mosaic look? What about geometric patterns or stencils? Logo, name, signature, motif or masking tape one colour then another to build up.
How about using spray cans and to protect the paint spray with several layers of lacquer finish."
