Garden room electrics

I currently have a garden shed with full power, with the garden circuit being a separate circuit on the main consumer unit. Power is provided to the shed via a buried 50mm armoured cable.

I am planning on replacing the shed with a proper garden room. Is it possible to utilise the current electricity connection in the new garden room, effectively directly replacing the shed with the garden room?

I would expect to have a secondary consumer unit in the garden room.

"Hi. It’s likely that you’ll be able to utilise your existing circuit depending on your load, but get an electrician in to have a look. Your existing cable size won’t be 50mm"

"Hi Thomas,

Yes you will be able to use the existing supply although it's not 50mm cable. I suggest first you get a qualified electrician to isolate the electrical supply to the shed via the consumer unit. Then it is safe to work on the shed.

After that the Electrician can come back and alter the supply to your requirements. If its a couple of sockets and a light 16/20A is able and by the sounds of it you will have the required cable size."

"Firstly, a 50mm armoured cable is HUGE. Usually exterior sheds / offices will be fed from a 10mm armoured cable primarily due to earthing (CPC) requirements in BS7671 , then load and volt drop calculation design requirements. I would advise that you get an electrician to verify your findings before further guidance can be provided."

"Hi Tomas in short yes you can utilise the current cable as long as it is suitable for the load."

"Hi
I very much doubt it’s a 50mm armoured cable but all being well and it tests out ok then yes you’ll be able to utilise the cable"

"Hi Yes you need an additional consumer unit in the garden room but armour cable is fine. Kev"

"First things is that like it is impossible you had 50mm cable. Anyway should be fine, just make sure that cable do not have any damage"

"Hi, Chances are you would be able to utilise the existing armoured cable that is there (however it will not be 50mm!) You'll most likely need a 10mm cable to be able to carry the load required for a second consumer unit - depending on length of run to the outbuilding and what you plan to have powered out there. You'll also need an earth rod installed out by the garden building."

"Yes, absolutely, providing the cable is of a sufficient size for the load that you will be applying to it. I don't think your armoured cable is 50mm. The cable size refers to the size of the live conductor. Your lights cable will be 1.5mm, your power 2.5mm. But it sounds like a simple job for an electrician to do."

"Depending on the size of cable wouldn't be a problem

You would wire it onto your new consumer unit and wire away from that"
