Fine sooty debris

Question

I have had a fall of fine sooty debris from the roof on to the loft floor. The fall covered an area of approximately 1.5 metre diameter. What might the potential cause be and what solutions might be appropriate?

Hi Barry, this could be your existing bitumen lining which over time will dry out and start shedding and cracking. You could change your lining which is a costly solution, or, apply an open pore spray foam and get the benefit of saving on heating costs, or do nothing.

If you say fine sooty debris do you mean from your roof as if it is a old house they use to use. A tar felt under the roof tiles. This would only apply if your roof is aged. And if so your felt is rotten and will need to be viewed by a professional asap

Could possibly be just a large amount of dust or possibly soot from a old chimney that may have been dropped previously in the atic.
