"That cable is earth cable for bonding it creates a path to earth in the event of a fault on the property"

"That earth wire is likely part of your protective bonding, which is essential for safety. It connects metal pipework to the electrical system’s earth to prevent dangerous voltages in case of a fault.

Before Removing It:
1. Check if It’s Still Needed –
• Since your gas meter has been moved outside, the bonding at the old meter location may no longer be necessary. However, your gas pipe inside the property may still require bonding at the point of entry.
• The bond to the incoming main water supply is usually required by regulations (BS 7671 in the UK).
2. Verify with an Electrician –
• If your electrical system has Main Protective Bonding to both water and gas at the correct points, the extra bonding at the old gas meter may be redundant.
• However, simply removing it without confirming the rest of the bonding is correct could be a safety risk.

Best Approach:
• Do not remove it yet.
• Check where your main bonding is connected (typically near the main water stopcock and gas meter entry point).
• Consult an electrician to confirm whether it can be safely removed or needs repositioning.

If the bonding is redundant, an electrician can properly disconnect it without affecting safety compliance."

"Yes but keep the water connection intact. Also run a new 10mm earth cable to the new gas meter position from the consumer unit. (Very important)

"You need to get it checked by a qualified NIC EIC
or Napit registered electrical contractor.
No one can possibly answer the question without an inspection of the installation."

"Hi,
The mains water pipe and gas incoming should both be bonded at the consumer unit , individually. If you have checked that bth are bonded and that cable is redundant then yes it can be removed.
If you are unsure , post a job to have an electrician come to investigate.

Rob"
