Determining how close a tree is?

How can I tell if a tree is tall enough and close enough to fall and damage my house? I assume I'd need to hire a tree surgeon?

"If the Shadow of tree falls on the house from mid afternoon the tree is close enough get the house should it fall over. The propensity of the tree to fall will depend the type of tree and condition of the in general, a tree surgeon will be able to survey the tree and tell you in more detail what works if any are needed and most will have a look for free if you ask for a quote but a full tree survey will cost.
