Cutting back wisteria

What's the best time to cut back wisteria? I moved into a cottage last year where it grows over the front and I've no idea how you keep it in check. So far I've seen advice that says to cut it in summer, spring and winter. Which is best?

"Armed with some sharp secateurs and a sturdy ladder, you should prune your wisteria twice a year to keep it looking its best. The first pruning is carried out in summer after flowering, usually in July or August. The second prune should take place in January or February while the plant is dormant."

"The best time to do Formative pruning (Harder, Re-Shaping Pruning) to Wisteria, is late Autumn/Winter. If it's just the young runners, you do this in August/September"

"It depends on your situation. You can, and I have just, trimmed back Wisteria in December.
It keeps you in control and not the Wisteria."

"You need to prune wisteria twice a year. Once in summer after it has flowered (late July) and then again in Winter (February). Pruning wisteria twice a year helps to: Control the growth and shape of your wisteria (formative pruning)"

"I myself would cut it back in the winter as this gives a chance for the coming months to preestablish itself"

"Anytime is okay to cut it try to avoid winter. Just make sure you don’t catch the main stem when cutting otherwise could end up killing the whole thing"

"To prune Wisteria it is always best to only cut back the soft new growth leaving about 2 leaves on the branches. You can do this after the flowers have gone which would be around the end of July until the beginning of September"
