Is it safe for me to inspect whether there is Asbestos present in a ceiling? What sort of steps can I take to do so in a safe manner?

"Artex and other textured coatings containing asbestos were still used in construction until asbestos was banned. These products are often found on the walls and ceilings of residential properties.

It's not possible to know if artex contains asbestos just from looking at it. To know for sure, it would need to be sampled and tested."

"Hi
If it is Artex your are concerned about you need not worry. There are three kinds of asbestos blue, brown and white. Blue and brown should be avoided, they are deadly but white is fairly innocuous. Although breathing in any dust is bad for you white asbestos is no worse than a lot of other things, brick dust for instance. You can send samples off to be analysed. If you consider that virtually every home in the 80's had Artex which would have involved tens of thousands of people applying it, everyone in the home being exposed to the dust the factories making the product and today virtually every home having it removed..... if white asbestos was as deadly as the blue or brown variant then hundreds of thousands of people a year would be dying from white asbestos related diseases, this is not happening. All of the above is a personal viewpoint and shouldn't be taken as factually accurate (legal indemnity) ......but to verify this and get more information check out www.asbestoswatchdog.co.uk/news/older-articles"

"If you think you have asbestos your best course would be to have this looked at by a specialised company that deals with this. They will inspect and remove the asbestos if needed."
