Can I paint my decking with Ronseal fence paint?

Hello, Does anyone know if it is okay to use Ronseal’s fence paint on decking? They’re both for wood and are pretty similar, but I don’t want to risk ruining my decking. Any advice would be great thanks!

"Hi Greg,
You are right to be careful with your decking - fence paint isn’t going to be suitable for your decking I’m afraid. It can wear off very easily and isn’t durable enough for decking. It could also stain your shoes when you walk across, which in turn could stain any other surfaces you walk across afterwards – from what I’ve seen from past customers, it can be a lot more trouble to use fence paint by far. I would recommend using decking oil by far, as fence paint won’t be able to protect like decking oil.
Decking oil will be able to protect against water, warping, swelling, drying and splitting. The only other alternative would be to use a different kind of boarding, seeing as the oil provides a covering, which would need to be re-applied again at a later point.

"Yes you can use it. Personally I use an oil "osmo" brand as it's the best available."

"According to Ronseal instructions, you shouldn't use fence paint on decking because it will not be durable. They have other paint products specifically for decking such as the Ronseal Rescue paint which is durable and resists foot traffic and weathering."

"Hi Greg,

The answer is no. According to Ronseal instructions, you shouldn’t use fence paint on decking because it will not be durable.

They have other paint products specifically for decking such as the Ronseal Rescue paint which is durable and resists foot traffic and weathering. It is also suitable for a range of decking including hardwood, softwood, ridged and smooth.

"The decking stain should be oil based to keep waterproof and for anti-slip."
