"Winter

So, why should you have your trees assessed this winter rather than wait for spring?

Here are some of the top benefits of winter tree maintenance:

Leaves hide things! It's easy to spot tree issues more quickly when they’re bare and you can make better decisions on which branches to trim.

Winter snowfall can overload weakened tree branches, posing a safety risk of falling branches on your property.

Dormant trees recover faster! Trimming trees in the winter during their dormant period is better so they can focus their energy on healing.

In the summer, trees need to focus their efforts on producing leaves and growing.

Cold weather means fewer pests! Pests thrive during spring and summer, making your tree more vulnerable to infestation.

Winter tree-trimming ensures tree wounds can properly heal before the bugs come out. Additionally, it will be easier to treat existing pest infestations."

"Now’s a good time as the leaves wont be hiding any sins , but also saying that die back is easy to identify as to where leaf’s aren’t growing"

"Ground based visual inspection of the tree component structure is best conducted in winter when the whole tree structure is unobscured by leaves. The vitality of a tree is best assessed when the tree is, or is supposed to be in full leaf. i.e. July-August."

"The summer when in blossom, this will provide you with the general health of the tree and if any parts are not blossoming/flowering etc, this can pinpoint certain issues."

"The best time to check a trees health is in spring when the trees come into full leaf (some take longer than others), however there are a few things you can do to identify declining trees when not in leaf - check for fungal brackets, slightly bend some branches to see if they snap rather than bend, if the tree is evergreen look out for bare patches with no leaf, check for rot and holes especially at the base, look for leaves on the ground which can be an indicator the tree was in leaf the previous season."
