What is the best type of paint to use on metal surfaces?

Most paint manufacturers now do same paint for wood and metal surfaces .
You can get oil or waterbased paint.any DIY or decorating shop should be able to stear you in the right direction

If you don't want to use undercoat.  Hammerite paint will be the best.  Depending on the tipe of metal

You can get a metal primer from dulux that works well enough, but personally I use zinnser(red can) as it does not scratch off the metal and makes the surface ready for a top coat of gloss or satinwood etc. Satinwood is used for radiators alot so it's a good finish for metal surfaces.

Zinsser All coat exterior is a good paint for metal surfaces. If the metal is ferrous and has started to rust then Hammerite is a good product as is Granville direct to rust paint.
