im not a painter but you may want to look at linseed oil paint.

I recommend an oil-based paint as the finished coat. If you are layering on colours then a primer and undercoat is recommended prior to  a oil-based gloss finish. If using varnish, same again, use an oil based product by brands such as Ronseal.
