Are door chains any good?

Are door chains any use? I want to improve the security at my elderly parents home, when people call at the door. But chains seem a bit flimsy.

Better options out there. Bar style versions tend to offer more security.
I’d recommend getting a doorbell/camera or even a spy hold fitted. 
Once the door has been opened it would be hard for an elderly person to close the door against an intruder

Door bars are better but they can only be installed on flush fitted doors

They are an added part of security but not the strongest. I would add a high security mortice lock or cylinder depending on door you have

Hi, I believe a chain is used to open door enough to identify who is there before it is unlocked. A little door view/spy hole would be the cheapest solution, if your feeling fancy a Ring door bell will allow you to identify and talk to the person before you unlock the door. Or a little video intercom system (you may be able to have the door unlock with a press of a button if getting up to the door is a challenge thisbwould requirean electronic lock). As you say a little nudge with the shoulder and it will pop the chain open.

Door chains are a good extra security furniture which have good high security ratings and are highly recommended

Personally, I do not think they add a lot to security and there are better routes to assess who is at your front door: ring doorbell is a better option.
