Should my new landlord have shown me evidence of an annual gas check?

You should ask your landlord if you need to know. Your landlord might use British Gas and there might be paperwork in the property.

Landlords are required by law to have gas appliances and a tightness test done every year and when a new tenant moves in 
Tightness test is to check for gas leaks
