Air gap around downlighters

I've read that you need to leave an air gap around downlighters to stop them overheating. Do they all need this? And is there a standard sized gap?

"Get fire rated leds , hold halogens more of a issue as these bad boys heat up !! Leds not such a worry but still I wouldn’t cover them in inches of insulation, still need some room to disperse heat"

"You don't need any gap, its normal to be heat. If they overheat the fuse will go off"

"Hi
Insulation should be keep away from the top and sides (about 10mm) of the downlights so heat can disperse, you can covers , look a bit like mixing bowls that you put over the top to stop the problem"

"All downright vary in size depending on the type style etc. Never heard of air for down lights before but, if its any explanation, when ever you cut out a ceiling to a particular size of a down light you've purchased, they'll always be a slight gap anyway."

"There is the possibility that if you use LED bulbs there is not that big deal with Air Gap as they produce very little or no heat."

"Depends on wattage of downright, halogen need the gap due to heat build up, we used to leave at least 150mm around unit to allow heat to reduce. The more modern LEDs don't produce the same heat so we only leave 75mm around these."

"Depending on the type of lamps , if you are using halogen lamps I would want around 100mm clearance, most new down lights are fire rated so you can put them in with insulation"
