Agreeing price and timescale with handyman

Is it always necessary to agree a price and timescale before a handyman starts work? And should you get this in writing? I'm just wondering if this is standard practice or would I be considered a pain?

"Personally, I always provide a written quote that includes the scope of the job and the associated cost. This is emailed to the customer before starting the job, in order to get agreement from both parties. For example if I am assembling an IKEA bookcase the scope is quite straightforward, however re tiling a bathroom is more involved, so I annotate the major tasks associated with the work, this serves to keep the customer updated as to what is involved and show that I know what is involved in the job. There can be unexpected issues that crop up in a work that entail additional work and materials. When this occurs I discuss with the client and email the updated schedule and cost. I prefer email but text or WhatsApp is often used. Basically, for a simple job ask for a one line sentence stating the: What, When & How Much & How Long?"

"It is not necessary to write a agreement. The verbal agreement is also a kind of agreement anyways. However with a written form it is easier to avoid any argumentation between you and the trader in regards to the time, quality or price of work. More details written with the agreement gives more security for both the client and the trader."

"As a handyman I always quote a price and labour with a timescale when I could start the work and always sent an email or txt and wait for the customer to agree"

"Hello Greg,

It really depends on many factors.

Generally speaking small odd jobs don’t require the formal hassle, it’s more of an issue with larger projects where 3rd party liability comes into play. That being said, a well organised business person will have paperwork at the ready whatever the situation.

In any case, contracts should disclose flexibility in both deadlines and expenses.

Hope this helped,

"It is professional on the part of a handyman/contractor to submit by email a quote without obligation verifying:
Agreed diary dates
Timescale on job completion (approx)
Works involved and who will be in attendance
Material and labour costings
Payment Invoicing details."

"Hi there, really would depend on type of work, for example if there is unforeseen problems that occur then you would be responsible for the time and cost of the work required.

If the jobs straight forward then a binding contract can be useful for you as the customer.

Construction may not always be as straightforward as we all hope. Every builder is responsible for managing risks and getting the job done to the regulated standard"

"I personally think that as a contractor a price is only a quote upon the description of the job requirements most house holders don't fully understand the complexities of the works involved and both parties must be flexible when work is commencing.
And once the price and timescale has been agreed even in writing there may always be some underlying cause that the job may take abit longer or will cost a bit more this is where alot of problems start with the customer and contractor
Hope this helps"
