Adding lime to mortar

What's the difference between lime and hydrated lime? Which do I add to mortar to make it easier to use?

"Personally I would only use lime if I was to render, if you only need it to make morter more pliable and last long you can get plasticiser / admixture.
Hope this helps"

"Hi Harry, I would say both kinds of lime will do the same job , but hydrated lime has had water added and additives to make it softer and used for the garden and plants, I use lime when building stonework as the building has movement and with lime will not crack , but a strong cement will crack , best thing u can do is Google it hope this has helped you good luck ."

""Well Harry, when possible we normally would use pit sand for bricklaying mortar with plastiser added. If the the sand is say soft washed it's no good for laying bricks without the addition of hydrated lime to make it workable.
Nowadays it's the only lime used with the possible exception of lime putty with is used on gauged arches and glazed bricks exclusively.""

"You need to add hydrated lime to the mortar. This takes away the need of using plasticiser."
