Home Improvement Planner: Your Guide to Transforming Your Home
Looking for ways to renovate, enhance and modernise your home in 2025? This guide will provide you with the best approaches and methods to consider for home improvements at different times of the year.
This might be because of the capacity of these jobs to provide initial benefits in the short-term when timely undertaken or/and if you want to hire certain professionals when they have better availability and before their busy seasons.
What’s more, spreading projects across 12 months can also make it easier to budget and plan out based on your current income and likely income later in the year. It can also provide more flexibility in case you need to delay certain jobs.
Annual to-do List:
While developing a perfect to-do list won’t be possible for any given year, it’s worth considering a broad list of what you may want to book in at what times of year.
Note: If a task is needed urgently, book an emergency professional. If there are safety concerns or/and an immediate danger, contacting the emergency services may even be needed (e.g. a gas leak). Take all suitable safety steps and precautions if a hazardous scenario exists.
Here’s approximately what to do throughout the year:*
- January: Book jobs for the days/weeks ahead during the quiet post-holiday period.
- February to March: Book jobs for the coming weeks before the busy summer season
- April: Book tasks for April through June.
- May-June: If not possible in April, try book some tasks for early Summer as soon as you can within this time window to avoid longer waiting times.
- July: Certain mid to late Summer tasks could be booked at this time, plus even some tasks for Autumn if available yet.
- August to September: Book late summer and Autumn tasks as early as you can during this timeframe, if not only already suitable and possible to book earlier. You should also look at booking some Winter tasks around this time if possible.
- October: Book early winter tasks around this time if feasible. The sooner, the better as booking in November or December can lead to longer waiting times. That said, if certain tasks are needed and you can’t or haven’t booked in October, later still works but waiting times can be longer.
* Again, this will depend on the type of jobs, waiting times and so forth. The sections below will help provide more informed guidance, helping you to work out your home improvement planner for 2025.
The sections that follow focus on a mix of when to book tasks and the months in which certain tasks/projects should likely take place.
January Focus
Even at this stage, it’s still worth considering some winter home projects. However, not only can these jobs prove advantageous for your home in the short-term before the days get longer and warmer, January acts as the relatively quiet post-holiday period for booking indoor renovations.
Some projects you’ll want to consider at this time of year include:
- Getting your kitchen refreshed (e.g. replacing worktops, new units/cabinets, fresh appliances, new flooring etc.)
- Having one or more rooms painted or getting fresh wallpaper installed
- Bathroom refreshments like replacing a toilet, shower/bath, basin or/and new installations such as a heated towel rail, mirrored cabinets, a vanity unit etc.
- Insulation upgrades such as loft insulation, wall insulation and floor insulation
February-March
These months are perfect for spring-planning, while also taking the chance to book outdoor tradespeople such as gardeners, landscapers, roofers and so forth, before their busier times in late spring and through the summer months.
Consider hiring professionals in February-March for jobs such as:
Hiring a Gardener
- Weeding
- Lawn mowing
- Trimming the hedges
- Cleaning a patio or/and driveway
- Pruning plants
Hiring a Landscaper
- Artificial grass installation
- Have a new real grass lawn added
- Flagstone paving installation
Hiring a Roofer/Gutter Cleaning Service
- Get some roof tiles replaced
- Have your gutter cleaned or/and repaired
- Full roof replacement project
April-June
Late spring through early Summer is a good time for outdoor projects including patio builds, landscaping or/and exterior painting. You should book earlier (i.e. in or around April) due to higher demand later in the summer.
Some projects to look into for this timeframe include:
- Having a patio installed
- Artificial or real grass installation (if not already done)
- Getting new decking added to your garden
- Exterior painting of your home
- New functional seating/dining zone
July-September
As the summer progresses, there are certain summer renovations you may want to look at scheduling and booking in for this time of year. This may relate to preserving other times of year for different tasks (e.g. due to budgeting or/and availability of professionals).
Either way, here are some Summer renovations that could take place for Jul-Sept:
- Loft conversion
- Double- or triple-glazed windows
- Skylight windows to let more light in
- Solar panel installation (maybe with a solar battery too)
- Heat pump fitted in your garden
- Get a smart thermostat installed
- New casement windows
October-December
This is the time of year to focus on pre-winter maintenance to make your home keep the heat in better as the colder months arrive and to lower your heating bills.
Of course, where suitable and possible, you should book these tasks earlier on (e.g. September/October) before the busier times of the year for the relevant professionals.
Some October-December home improvement tasks to consider are:
- Annual boiler servicing*
- Getting your heating systems checked
- Draught-proofing measures
- New security lighting for your garden (e.g. motion-sensitive floodlight)
* Since this is required annually, you’ll need to get it serviced by the one-year date from the prior servicing, so this may or may not be possible at a preferred month. That said, many households tend to get their boiler serviced in these months, such as because they started with say a November or December servicing and it has repeated at this time of year annually.
