5 Gardening Jobs to Think About in April
April sits between the start of Spring and the very early Summer (depending on when Summer starts in your books).
As the Spring peaks, it’s important to consider what gardening jobs should take place in the fourth month of the year to ensure you best take care of your home’s outdoor space(s) as plant life continues to grow and expand following the long, cold winter. Without further ado, here are five gardening jobs to think about this April!
1. Time to Sow Hardy Annuals
April is arguably the perfect time to sow hardy annuals (e.g. lavender, common sage, tomatoes, strawberries, garlic etc.). Of course, it’s important that you sow these in the right way and with a suitable plan.
On the one hand, some hardy annuals may not go well together. Beyond that, it’s important to choose a suitable location to sow their seeds, which being ideally one with light soils and in a strategically chosen part (or several parts/regions) of your garden for optimal results.
2. Get Back Into Cutting The Grass
While March is generally the best time to return to mowing your lawn after the winter, April may also work well as a starting point, particularly if March has proved particularly wet.
Of course, even if you first cut the grass this year in March, April is around about the time you’ll want to resume mowing the lawn regularly. From sometime between mid-March and early April as a start point, it’s best to get back into cutting the grass every one or two weeks from there on out.
3. Remove Weeds From Your Garden
April is a good time to remove weed from your garden. This might mean using a weed killer or for a simpler, cleaner approach, but on some protective gloves and remove the weeds by hand. Just be sure to wash your hands with soap after just in case.
You’ll want to remove weeds on a regular basis from March through the summer. There also exist approaches to prevent weed growth in the first place (e.g. using a garden hoe tool to limit the capacity of weeds to grow in your garden). Whatever the case, be sure to proceed with caution and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
4. Welcoming to Birds To Your Outdoor Space
When we say you should welcome birds to your outdoor space, we aren’t talking about embodying the spirit and skills of Dr. Doolittle. Instead, we’re talking about introducing additions to your garden space so that birds find it more appealing to visit.
Some ideas include adding a bird feeder, bird bath or/and nest box. One way or another, it’s important to think about this strategically. For example, if you have any pets, the bird-friendly installations being added should not be within reach of them to ensure the birds are not attacked or worse.
5. Fertilise and Reseed Your Garden
During the month of April, it’s also best to fertilise and reseed your lawn. This can help achieve a more even and consistent lawn that is easier on the eye, which, of course, becomes more important as we move through Spring and approach the summertime.
If you decide to fertilise and reseed your lawn, make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully (and also confirm that your lawn as it is actually needs to be reseeded - though generally it will).
It’s not advised to cut the grass in or around this time to allow your lawn to grow. Therefore, while, as we’ve advised, it is a good idea to get into regular lawn mowing in April (or from mid-March, assuming it’s not raining a lot nor is it forecast to rain plenty), you might want to take a brief break from this when fertilising and reseeding your lawn.
